Gerike’s Point, Swartvlei Beach

Rumour has it the walk from Swartvlei Beach parking lot to Gerike’s Point was voted one of the top 10 beach walks in the world by Conde Nast.  And, if it’s not true, it should be.

Spectacular, slightly wild and endlessy interesting it’s a walk you can do daily without repeating the same experience twice.  At low tide hundreds of rock pools full of creatures are exposed. Gently prod the sea urchins and watch them react or examine a knobbly starfish – just be gentle and put it back when you’re finished. Slow torture and death is too good for the cretins who take them home and dry them out to use as ornaments.

Most times, there are dolphins surfing in the breakers, and from October to December you can see the whales and their calves in the bay.

The diving off Gerike’s is good, and the spear fishing is rewarding for the experts. The sea is rough and the currents are treacherous so make sure you know what you are doing, or go with someone who does.

For children, or the more timid of us, you can’t beat swimming in one of the clear, deep rock pools right near the Point.

The climb to the top of Gerike’s is not onerous and the view from the top is fantastic. Also enables you to spot the good mussel beds so that you can pick your quota for the pot. Remember, you need a permit, available from the Post Office in Sedgefield, and take only what you need for one meal.
