Paragliding over Sedgefield

For anyone wondering about the helicopter flying overhead yesterday, this story from the EP Herald.

A 46-YEAR-OLD Wilderness woman smashed into a hillside in Sedgefield while paragliding from the popular Cloud 9 launching spot yesterday, injuring her back.

She landed in an inaccessible area and was eventually airlifted to safety.

Advanced life support paramedic Jacques Ainslie from ER24 said the tip of Zae Mock‘s glider touched a treetop, hooking the glider and smashing her into the ground.

Dense vegetation and the steep gradient of the slope hampered rescue attempts, Ainslie said.

“We came down by ropes, it was approximately an 85° angle. Because of the dense bushes, we couldn‘t take her up or down. The only way was to hoist her up by helicopter.”

He said an SA Air Force helicopter from Port Elizabeth was called in to hoist Mock off the hillside. “We stabilised her on a spine board and put her into a rescue basket attached to the helicopter winch,” he said.

The helicopter flew Mock to the ER24 ambulance, which was parked in Sedgefield. From there she was taken to the Knysna Provincial Hospital for X-rays.
